An easy way to tell what status your phone could be is the money you pay for it. If you paid $, $99 or $199 for a top model Apple, Samsung or Nokia phone, a price that low means your phone has been subsidized, which is locked.  If your phone is locked, you won’t be able to use a foreign SIM card.  If you paid $500 and up for a top model, your phone is unlocked and you are free to use SIM card of any region.

Cambodia has one of the most competitive mobile markets in the world, with 7 phone carriers for a population of about 15 million. The carriers are Cellcard/Mobitel, Metfone, Smart, qb, Beeline, CooTel and Excell. Don’t be surprised, if you see Cambodians with three or even four cellphones in hand. That is because making cross-network calls is expensive and difficult.

You can buy SIM cards at any of the phone shops or the mobile companies, the latter is more recommended. Bring your passport and a valid visa with you for SIM card registration. In case when you lose the phone, you will get a replacement SIM card.
